“Lama, Lama I’ve heard you are very selective when sifting through monastic candidates. What are your criteria for monastic applicants?” a student asked.
“Do you seek a monastic career?” asked the teacher.
“Oh no, I was just curious.” answered the student.
“Idle curiosity, indulged solely for it’s entertainment value can be a type of foolish talk that dissipates time and energy as well as distracts from the lifestyle of practicing Buddha’s teachings.” explained the lama.
When is a true statement, even a spiritually true statement, reduced to mere foolish talk? When it is used as a distraction from that which is truly important. When is a question, even a spiritual question but a trap? When it’s asking is a manipulative ruse to contrive intimacy and self-importance.
We all long to feel important every once in a while. Who can be truly more important then a tenth level Bo-dhi-sat-tva. Do you want to be important? Then hurry up and accomplish full enlightenment.
Who hasn’t occasionally dreaded feelings of loneliness and isolation? Who hasn’t occasionally craved for greater feelings of closeness, intimacy and love? What could be a greater antidote then to deeply feel your non-duality with every living being as well as the Buddha of Compassion himself? Do you want more feelings of closeness, intimacy and love? Then develop the visceral, gut-level realizations of NON-duality that you could truly crave, without even knowing it.
