Bliss and Openness pt. 27
What is the Meaning of Life?
We want to keep things practical, my friend. So
let’s contrast tantra’s development and completion
stages in terms of the meaning of life.
If we were to ask a Tibetan-buddhist Scholar what
the meaning of life was he’d most likely explain:
“The Meaning of Life can be found
in gathering the two Collections
for the two Purposes.”
At that point our eyes could glaze over, our jaw
could hang slack, and line of drool, yes drool,
could gradually descend from the corner of our mouth!
At which point our kindly scholar could, good
naturedly, point and laugh.
He could then explain that the “two Purposes” are:
#1 personally gaining enlightenment so that,
#2 we could then full liberate all others.
He could also teach us that the “two Collections” are:
#1 the collection of good Karma,
#2 and the collection insight.
It could be argued that the:
• visual imaginings,
• verbal recitations
• and the physical offerings
of tantra’s development stage are largely concerned
with the purification of Bad-karma and the accumulation
of Good-karma.
A case could also be made that the deconstruction of:
• visual imaginings
• and physical sensations
characteristic of tantra’s completion stage are
primarily geared to increasing one’s experience of
the wisdom of letting go.
O.K. let’s squeeze this into a nutshell, the two
accumulations required for enlightenment are those
of Good karma and Insight. Tantra’s development stage
deals largely with Karma and tantra’s completion
stage deals largely with the wisdom of Letting-go.
Is there a practical application to all this? Is there
an easy way to accomplish full Buddha-hood in this
life? We’ll explore that, tomorrow.
