Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #164
from your Buddhism expert
Using the Mani Mantra
It is often said that if you want to get the most
out of a mantra, the first thing to do is to learn
how to pronounce it. If this is true, one of the
secrets to transcending all our sorrow, fear, anger
and turmoil is properly learning how to use the
Six-syllable mantra: “Om Mani Padme Hum.”
The greater your ease of pronunciation, the greater
the power you’ll experience, the greater
effectiveness you’ll savor – and the greater your
ability to live life to the full.
Thing is, when most people recite the “Mani” they go
about it the wrong way. They don’t use the principals

principals that will double the effectiveness of
your mantra recitation in one session.
Here are some mistakes I see people making when they
first work with the Six-syllable mantra:
1. They try to re-invent the wheel, rather than
learning what Tibet’s greatest saints have said
about “Om Mani Padme Hum” - consequently you can
add lifetimes on to your spiritual quest.
2. They listen to the wrong teachers and never learn
what the mantra really means or it’s true
significance - so you could wind-up hobbling yourself
on Buddha’s path.
3. In the name of being “positive” they fail to
investigate how to use the “Mani” at the time of
death - which only sows the seeds of fear… like
anyone needs anymore of those!
4. For the sake of convenience they do not learn how
to use the Six-syllable mantra to receive greater
happiness and blessings – when you hear of someone
who’s life was not improved despite their practice
of the Six-syllable mantra, it means they were never
taught how to use it.
5. They do not discover what the “Six Perfections of
a Bodhisattva” are or how to use the mantra “Om Mani
Padme Hum” to accomplish them. Yes, it helps to know
what your target is… if you ever hope to hit it.
6. They only use one technique of recitation – you
see a lot of people working hard on Intoning. Nothing
wrong with Intoning except that when you compare
it to the “easy” or “subtle” techniques – there is
no comparison. Use recitation techniques that will
actually improve your learning curve.
7. Forcing perfection – to make progress you do not
need to use a cattle prod or a whip. Much more can
be accomplished if you relax and play with the two
sets of pronunciation drills. Whenever you try to
force things, you’re increasing the chance of
confusion, which means you could just reinforce
destructive habits that can plague your practice
with self doubt and second guessing.
8. They do not bother to receive tantric initiation
and so you cut yourself off from a great stream of
blessings and spiritual momentum that only comes
from the blessings of a master.
9. They do not learn how to meaningfully meditate
upon the “Mani” as so it never becomes effortless,
it doesn’t increase their experience of concentration
and they fail to plant the seeds of truly
transcendental insight. Don’t let this happen to you.
I teach all the above in far greater detail in my
