21 Guns?

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #188
from your Buddhism expert

What idiot dreamed this up? Some “genius” in
Washington D.C. thought it would be absolutely brilliant
to greet Pope Benedict with a 21 gun salute! Don’t
they know it’s his birthday? How soothing, could the
sound of 21 rifles going off, be to an 81 year old
heart anyway?

And does anyone else get the strange irony, of
greeting the earthly emissary of the prince of peace,
with the tools of warfare?

When I turn 81 I don’t want the president to startle
me with 21 rifle shots. I think I’d prefer 21 roses,
how about you? Oh, even better 21 nice pieces of
fresh, ripe fruit {organic if you please} that way
the president and I can sit down and enjoy a
delightful nosh, wouldn’t that be nice?

Internationally we Americans have a bit of a reputation
as proverbial cowboys. How, I ask you… how will we
ever transcend that stereotype if we persist in greeting foreign dignitaries with a hale of bullets?

Likewise, it stands to reason, that if our previous
experiences of breathing meditation could have been
frustrating,
boring, disappointing, or in anyway less then peaceful,
blissful and transformative then it could be time to
re-think our approach.

If we keep on doing what we’ve been doing, doesn’t it
stand to reason that we could continue to
experience what we’ve always experienced? The Big Book
of Alcoholics Anonymous defines insanity as:

“Doing the same thing over and over while
expecting different results.”

What’s going on? Do we really think that we’re too
spiritual to heed these words of wisdom?

It’s simple. It all boils down to this: Either you are
utterly delighted with the gargantuan amounts of:
• peace,
• bliss and
• growth
that you are receiving from your current approach to
meditation or it could be time to try something new,
something a little closer to what Buddha taught,
something that could give you even more of the results
that Buddha received.
