Why Love?

“But I can’t leave him,” Suzie said between sobs, “even though he beats me and molests the kids; I can’t leave him, because… I love him!” Yeah and that proves what? Does Suzie’s love some how validate her partner? No. Is love so rare that it can only be inferred that if someone receives it then they must somehow be deserving of it? No.

Ladies and Gentlemen brace yourself for a radical teaching. Why is love so common. Why does almost everyone, at one time or another, feel love for another? Why can we feel love for those who don’t love us back? Why can we feel love for those with whom we are not compatible? Why can we feel love for both nice as well as cruel people? Why can we feel love for beautiful as well as ugly people? Why can we feel love for members of either gender? Why can we feel love for furry, subservient quadrapeds we call pets? Why can we feel love? Because it is our Nature. Our higher nature, our Buddha nature is profoundly loving.

Just as a rosary’s a strong thread pervades all it’s beads, likewise every thing being and phenomena is pervaded by the “Dharmakaya” or Buddha’s nature. Whether you call it the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost, Allah the kind, Brahma, Tao, Higher-self or the Buddha of Compassion; we are pervaded by something more loving, insightful and powerful than we might expect. Just as a fellow driving through a twisting canyon road, may strive to tune his car’s receiver to his favorite radio station, likewise the spiritual seeker strives to tune-into his Buddha-nature.

Love is as close as the Buddha who already pervades us. So it’s O.K. for us to gently leave an abusive partner, even if you love him. Don’t worry, you’ll find another to love and to love you back. The challenge is to hold out for the partner who is perfectly compatible with you, in the most wonderful way.

If infinite love already pervades us, then how shall we tune-in to it in the most spontaneous, habitual, effortless and effective manner? Each of the 7 telephone lessons of the Beginning series trains the student in the ways of deep, transformative love both intellectually as well as viscerally. If you don’t study with me then by all means find a teacher to help you become that great spirit that your dog already thinks you are.
