Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #155
from your Buddhism expert
Rat Race Rebellion
Why are more and more folks, saying “good-bye” to
their traditional 9 to 5 jobs and opting to work
at home? For the same reason that you check to make
sure your hand is out of the garbage disposal before
you turn it on!
Yes, while some do strike it rich working in the
mainstream, many do not. In-fact many have come to
view mainstream employment as a sort of garbage
disposal that can chew you up and spit you out. Some
view corporate America as a thief that can often steal
it’s employees’ time, energy and talents, not to
mention their families.
Why are people rebelling against the traditional 9
to 5? In a word Suffering! The heart of Buddhist
renunciation is to:
• first - notice the instances of suffering in
one’s life,
• second - look for a pattern,
• third – look for the causes of those
sufferings,
• and fourth – take action to avoid both
those sufferings and their causes.
There are many religions and many views of
renunciation. Many take a very ascetic view of it.
It is almost as if they are saying, “if it feels
good, then don’t do it!” That’s right, many folks
view renunciation as an opportunity to say “good bye”
to pleasure. Is that Buddha’s view as well?
No! Absolutely not! What then is Buddhist
renunciation really about? In a word, “Suffering.”
Buddhist renunciation is all about saying “good bye”
to suffering and it’s causes. It is also about saying
“hello” to happiness and it’s causes. So, if you see
someone who thinks they are a Buddhist but who is
habitually sour-faced... then there is a good chance
they got confused and have renounced pleasure,
instead of renouncing suffering.
What could some of the sufferings be in your life,
that you’d like to renounce? Could you have had your
fill of feeling stressed out, scattered and {at times}
quite powerless?
