What should we do with the Bliss?


So there you are: you’ve skillfully practiced pages
16-17 of “Quick Path to Happy Peace” and your heart
is generating concentric waves of Compassion’s bliss.
But, what are concentric waves?

Imagine you are standing by a pond. Notice how calm
and motionless it’s surface seems to be. Take a stone,
and just sort of give it an underhanded toss so it
lands in the body of water with a satisfying “ker-plop.”
Watch how little, circular waves form, expand, and
are then replaced by even more ring-waves. Likewise
it is very easy to generate those heart waves of
compassion once you’ve received telephone tutoring.
Now that you’re grooving on compassion’s bliss, what
do you do next?

If we were Hindu or Sufi we might just stay there. We
might just marinate in the Heart-bliss of
compassion and hope that feeling these wonderful
feelings could somehow make us a better person or even
a fully realized saint. But we’re not Hindus or Sufi’s,
we’re followers of the Buddha. And as such we know
that the heart-wood of the Bodhi-tree, the essence
of the Buddha’s wisdom teachings are found in the
simple act of flip-flopping between the practices of
Noticing and Letting-go, Noticing and Letting-go,
Noticing and Letting-go.

How are we to perform this counter-intuitive act of
Letting-go of Compassion’s heart-bliss? I strongly
recommend using the Silent-contemplative exercises
known as the “Sutric Questions.” They are found on
pages 18-19 of “Quick Path to Happy Peace”.

Of course our inner whiner might not like the sound
of Letting-go of compassion’s heart-bliss. And so we
could ask why? Why are we going to let go of the
concentric waves of heart bliss? Why are we going to
Let-go of that which feels good, and seems to make
us good? We’ll explore that tomorrow.
