Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #149
from your Buddhism expert
Bliss and Openness pt. 30
Why let-go of Bliss?
Bliss is delicious! Why did Buddha teach to Let-go of
everything, even bliss?
Yes, there are many types of sufferings. They can
fall into the categories of:
• not getting what we want, when we want it,
• not keeping what we enjoy for as long as we
desire,
• or simply having to put up with what we don’t
like.
Yep, that’s suffering. But what is it that could
keep us stuck in the perpetual cycle of death, birth
and suffering? Is it the mere experience of suffering?
Nope! It’s our reaction to our sufferings, whether
they’re petty or profound. What are the kinds of
reactions that could perpetuate the cycle of suffering?
Grasping! We can grasp at pain by trying to Push it
away and we can grasp a pleasure by trying to Pull
it closer. But, whether we’re pushing or pulling it’s
all grasping, just the same. Then what is the antidote?
Is the antidote to our desire to Push pain away, to
just do the opposite and instead try pulling it
closer? Nope, that’s just more grasping!
Is the antidote to our longing to Pull pleasure closer,
again, to just do the opposite and instead push it
away? Not so much! Why? Because that is just more
grasping. Well then, what are we to do?
Let-go! When pleasure enters the sphere of our
experience,
first: acknowledge it’s presence,
second: practice the yogas of letting go
and third: use the energy of pleasure to increase
our experience of love: the desire to lavish everyone
with blessings and their causes. But what should we
do with pain?
Let-go! When pain, be it subtle or grandiose, enters
our awareness,
first: acknowledge it’s presence,
second: practice the yogas of letting go
and third: use the energy of pain to increase our
experience of compassion: the longing to free everyone
from sufferings and their causes.
But what are the benefits of this dance between
awareness and letting-go? We’ll explore that tomorrow.
