Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #185
from your Buddhism expert
I love cats. Many years ago, when I was living in a
tiny little trailer, I was given a playful, black
and white kitty named “Sneakers.”
Quiet, yet affectionate, Sneakers was a perfect
roommate for a contemplative… until it got late,
however. Once I was asleep a silent alarm seemed to
go off in kitty’s head that told her it NOW was the
time for wind sprints, which is especially
challenging in a tiny trailer. That is why I
nicknamed her sessions “Midnight Madness.”

Of course “Sneaker’s” wind sprints served merely as
a warm-up for every evening’s main event: a round of
her favorite game, we’ll call
“Chase me, chase me;
good, now I’ll chase you!”
How did kitty attempt to rouse the sleeping yogi in
an effort to enlist him in her feline cardio? Through
the cunning stratagem of running across my chest,
followed by running across my tummy. If I had the
audacity to grunt, roll over and try to go back to
sleep she would be forced to use her ultimate weapon…
running across my head!
Needless to say, “Sneakers” behavior was not ruled
by her daily schedule or by a list of shoulds. Nope,
kitty was the epitome of spontaneity. Contemplatives
should follow her lead.
It is just no fun to have the joy sucked out of one’s
twice-daily meditation practice by being ridged and
inflexible. An effective meditation strategy meets
the needs of the moment, rather than squelching them
in the name of order.
No, the impulse for fun and spontaneity does not have
to be a distraction from or a detriment to spiritual
practice. Spontaneity can clue us in to the most
important need of the moment, so that we can choose
the spiritual exercise that can meet that need in
the most wonderful way.
That is one of the reasons “Quick Path to Happy Peace”, that you can down load for FREE from http://www.lamajigme.com
contains:
• sixteen prayers,
• nine semi-verbal contemplations,
• three silent meditations and
• four mini meditations.
Early yesterday evening, my sore throat was telling
me that it was NOT the time for prayers or semi-
verbal contemplations. So, I used two of the silent
meditations.
Although I spent the majority of the time playing
with the “Sutric Questions” I mentally warmed up
with the “Centering Questions” that are found on
pages 4 and 5 of “Quick Path to Happy Peace.”
The insight of the “Sutric Questions” is like a
vault door that can only be unlocked with the key that
is provided by the “Centering Questions.”

P.S. I’ll be showing how to program
the “awareness” into your mind and body, even while
you sit in a centering way. You’ll be in awe when you
see how quickly this changes your emotional state for
the entire day. A quick 5-minute session when you feel
blah can turn into 24-hours of uninterrupted bliss.
