Come, let us explore the contemplation topic of
the preciousness of this, our current human life.
In the Tibetan, Gelug lineage of the Dalai Lamas,
this teaching could be filed under the
following headings of
Lam Rim, Sutra and Renunciation.
Sadly, although many folks in
Japan, China, Korea, and Viet Nam
enthusiastically cloak themselves in the
banner of Buddha’s “Mahayana” teachings,
the full Sutric Lam Rim
{or gradual stages on Enlightenment’s path}
were historically, really not taught there,
in their fullest sense,
as they were in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan.
This important subject is explored in-depth
in both the Dalai Lama’s book,
“The Path to Enlightenment,”
and in his teacher, Dilgo Khentse's book,
“The Heart of Compassion.”
Classically, the Lam Rim teachings were preserved in
three types of texts:
#1 Extensive scholarly treatises,
#2 Concise Yogic Meditation hand-books or
#3 Very Concise Prose to aid in one’s mnemonics or recall.
Today’s exercise is Yogic,
or practically-contemplative in nature.
Rather than being designed to aid you in
writing a book report,
it’s designed to influence one on a gut-level and
reprogram one’s subconscious to
create a spontaneous desire to make the most of
this golden opportunity of having the
circumstantial, physical and
mental options and abilities to
both study and implement the essence of
Buddha’s teachings in the most wonderful way.
It has been said, that in every sect of every religion
{or spiritual system}
two types of teachers can be found:
#1 fear-mongers like
Tomas de Torqemada of the Spanish Inquisition
{not a very cuddly fellow} or
#2 love-mongers like Saint Francis of Assisi.
A fear-monger could appoach the
“Precious Human Life” teachings and
insist that if we fail to make the most of this
unique opportunity then we’ll fail to create the
Karmic-causes to receive another “Precious Human Life”
in our next rebirth and instead
suffer either as an animal, hungry ghost or
hell being… YUCH!
Wow, what’s that… instant neurosis?
I prefer to use this contemplation as a way to
joyfully celebrate as well as increase gratitude and
let that feed our energy of enthusiasm.
There is greater constructive power in
enthusiasm, gratitude and joy than in
guilt and the “S” word of should.
So. lets PLAY with precious human life contemplation
for 3 breaths.
During the IN-breath you could silently and mentally ask:
“What are some of the ways “I” could
make the most of this golden opportunity?”
And during the OUT-breath we
could relax into the soft verbal recitation of:
“Om Ma-ni Pad-me Hum!”
This well-worded contemplative question
serves as a metaphoric syringe that
injects two very empowering ideas
in the form of assumptions.
The FIRST assumption is that our
current life is precious, and despite how it
may appear, or what we’ve been told or
even what we feel;
we do have the opportunity to accomplish
Full enlightenment in THIS life.
Wow, that IS empowering, isn’t it?
The SECOND assumption is that there are
specific things that we CAN do to
truly make the most of it.
We are NOT powerless pawns or pathetic victims.
Armed with the power of the Six-syllable mantra, and
the loving guidance of a fully qualified Buddhist Lama,
we can master Buddha’s mental yogas of
Devotion, Awareness, Love and Letting-go with-OUT
ever forsaking our
jobs, homes, spouses, children or even pets!
And that’s good news, because
I love those furry little quadrupeds,
how about you?
I therefore challenge you to play with
that easy contemplation for
three breaths every morning and
three breaths every evening,
over the next 30 consecutive days.
How much more joy, gratitude and enthusiasm
could you be experiencing (this time) next month?
