The Myth of Attachment

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #193
from your Buddhism expert

“Seek and Destroy” is a kick ass song by Metallica.

It’s also a hair brained attitude that many would-be
Buddhists embrace. It comes from confusion and it
leads to frustration.

Mistake #1: Over simplification. Of course Buddha
taught that grasping leads to suffering, but is that
all he taught? In 84,000 discourses given over 40
years is that all Buddha taught? Of course not,
only a moron would insist on that. And it is equally
moronic to practice as if that was all he ever taught.

Mistake #2: Judeo-Christian baggage.

Many folks are happy to be Jews, Christians or
Muslims. And I say, “God Bless ‘em.” And if someone
who was born into a Judeo-Christian family or
culture wishes to later practice the Buddha’s
teachings that’s fine as well. BUT to drag one’s
Judeo-Christian views and practices into Buddhism
and simply give them Dharma-sounding labels is a
colossal error. Buddha warned us to relinquish our
grasp upon our preconceptions not to merely rename
them.

Mistake #3: Pointing the finger at Attachment. About a
decade ago Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady” skits were vary
popular on “Saturday Night Live.” She was renowned for
rhetorically asking,

“…could that be Satan?”

Likewise lot’s of idiotic, Buddhist wannabes can be
found running about, asking, “…could that be
Attachment?”

How dualistic could it be to jump about tossing
labels on things? Rather than going through life
saying, “I’m attached to that, nope I’m not attached
to this, but yes I’m attached to that…” wouldn’t it
be easier to simply practice Buddha’s mental yogas
of:
• simple Awareness and
• Letting-go?

It’s easy. We simply allow our consciousness to be
aware of whatever circumstance, sensation, thought
or phenomena spontaneously manifests in our sphere
of perception and then gently let go of it.

Mistake #4: confusing pushing away with letting go.
Guys, we do not have to cut our selves off from our
children, spouses, jobs or homes; that’s just goofy.
Rather, we can learn to live with them and love them
in a relaxed and groovy manner.

Mistake #5: debating attachment. When we were Jews,
Christians or Muslims and someone pointed their
finger at us while screaming “Sinner!” of course we
felt defensive. Likewise when a well meaning idiot
points to the joys in our lives and screams
“Attachments!” we can feel that same defensiveness
again.

Don’t debate whether the things in your life are
attachments or not. Don’t debate the inherent
evilness or virtue of attachment.

Don’t play their foolish games. Don’t get down in
the mud and wallow about with the pigs; it looks
silly and will ruin your suit.

Rather, choose to let go of everything that enters
your sphere of awareness. That’s right, I’m telling
you to be an equal opportunity contemplative, don’t
discriminate.

When pain creeps into your body – let go of it.
When bliss blossoms in your heart – let go of it.
When annoyance tugs at you – let go of it.
When love fills you – let go of it. But how?

A great, easy, fun and practical introduction to
Buddha’s science of awareness and letting go can be
found in the instructional CD that reveals the
secrets of the Centering Questions. I’ll teach you
a simple 5 minuet
exercise. When you apply it once every morning and
once every evening, it will create momentum, which
will increase your awareness, which will increase
your ability to let go which will increase your
peace. There are only 5 more days to take advantage
