Someone recently wrote me asking:
“I told my grandma I saw a mouse in the house and now my grandma and father are trying to catch it. I wish I didn't say anything I don’t want it to get hurt. If something happens to it will it be my fault?”
Fear undermines peace and love. Fear is universal. We all experience fear, and we all suffer the consequences of fear. In the past I too found that my fear for my bad karma often undermined my love and compassion for others. That is why I teach my students how to tame fear and harness it’s energy to progress even further on Buddha’s path of love, peace and the wisdom of letting go, in the fifth lesson of the Beginning series of telephone sessions.
In this moment your needs are simple: First, purify your own bad karma; and then Second, help the mouse to take auspicious rebirth.
In the first lesson of the Beginning series I fully explain this prayer:
Eternally “I” go for refuge
to Bud-dha, Dhar-ma and Sang-ha.
For the sake of every living being
may I accomplish Chen-re-zig.
Simply put, if you recite these four lines three times every morning and three times every evening you will purify your bad karma, increase your good karma and increase your love as well as create the causes so that at the very end of your current life you will take an immediate and auspicious rebirth in a place where Buddha’s teachings flourish and you will have the opportunity to complete the path to enlightenment in that lifetime.
If, after reciting the four line prayer three times, you recite this next prayer three times in the morning and three times in the evening, every day for 7 weeks, the mouse should be in very good shape!
May all who have perished over the last forty-nine days, especially at my hand,
now take immediate and auspicious Po-ta-la rebirth in the presence and care
of the Buddha of Compassion and once there quickly accomplish full enlightenment
so they can better aid and liberate all others: Om Mani Padme Hum!
Although “bardo” practices are introduced in the seventh lesson of the Beginning-series, they are explored in greater depth during the third and fourth lessons of the Advanced-series.
So there you have it, my friend; here is a little something you can do today, to help yourself and to help your furry little friend. Let’s snatch love and safety out of the jaws of fear!
