Litmus Test

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #161
from your Buddhism expert

Litmus Test?

Do you practice yoga? Do you sit zazen? Did you know
there are two simple litmus tests to measure the
effectiveness of your daily meditation? Simple!
When you are driving around town with a buddy or a
relative, how comfortable are you with silence?
Can you keep the radio off, and your mouth shut
while exploring a happy peace?

Many years ago, when I was a courier, I would have
full conversations with imaginary people when I was
riding my caffeine high. Or, if I was stressed,
although I might give my mouth a rest, my thoughts
still raced like a mouse scampering on his
exercise wheel.

So what is the second litmus test? When the day is
not quite so happy, can you sit in silence without
the constant mental review of the problems de jour?

This is not a phenomena known only to the laity. For
I have traveled with seminar leaders and self-help
gurus who simply could not shut up to save their
lives. I’ve watched them prattle on as an endless
avalanche of words cascaded out of their mouths,
about the mundane as well as the psudo-spiritual,
each more useless then the last {to paraphrase
Adam Sandler
}.

I’ve known “teachers” who could preach about the
need and the glory of meditation for hours but who
could only sit for mere moments. I’ve encountered enumerable “yogis” who were convinced that the
purpose of meditation was to “bliss out” and to that
ends had become utterly dependent upon herbs,
headphones, tapes, goggles and a seemingly endless
cavalcade of gagets.

The test of our practice is not found in isolation,
but in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Can
we happily share silence? Can we rest in awareness,
even in the presence of legitimate stress? If the
answer to either or both of these questions is “no”
then our solution lies not in lofty metaphysics or
obscure points of doctrine but in the realm of
mundane practicals.

HINT: did you know there is a way to bring the “Mani”
into your practice of silence? I’d love to give you
not just one or two but three secret, little known,
Mani-meditations that are as easy as they are
effective. Take advantage of THIS month’s special
