Devotion Essentialized

.

Of the four mental yogas of Buddha:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go, the
first one is devotion.
But does that mean?

Does that mean we have to worship, the:
• buzzed-headed,
• robe-wearing,
• fashion victim
who calls himself a teacher?

Nope, not so much.

Who is “Lama Chenrezig?”
The TEAM of our teacher and the Buddha of Compassion.

We express gratitude to our teacher by
enthusiastically applying his instructions and
we express devotion to the Buddha of compassion by
invoking him…

…with either the:
• Six-syllable mantra {Om Mani Padme Hum},
• the Three-syllable name {Chenrezig} or even the
• One-syllable seed {Hri}.

Warrior versus Coward

.

When English translations of sundry Buddhist Scriptures use
the term “Three-fold World” what are they talking about?

#1 The Desire realm which {traditionally} includes:
• the Hell-realms,
• the Hungry-ghost realms,
• the Animal-realm,
• the Human-realm
• the Demi-god {or Titan} realm and
• the {the lower part of the} God realm.

#2 The Middle part of the God realm is
called the Form realm and
#3 the Higher part of the God-realm is
called the Formless realm.

funny pictures-WELCOME

Do I expect you to believe in this stuff?
Nope, I don’t believe in belief, but
it could be useful to at least familiarize yourself with these terms if
you wish to read Buddhist books.

Personally I do NOT find a fundamentalist or literalist view to
be very empowering, and
it really just feeds fear, which
is the antidote to that pesky thing, us big boys call “peace.

dog

Perhaps you’ll find this a bit more useful...
all phenomena could fall under one of three headings,
that which is:
#1 coarse,
#2 subtle or
#3 very subtle.

Just as every night we keep moving from sleep, to dreams and
then wake up and roll over,
likewise throughout the waking day we keep rotating from
Very-subtle, to Subtle and to Coarse states and experiences.

Rather then seek to manipulate his experience a
true Tantrika "rolls with the punches" as...

funny pictures of dogs with captions

...various states spontaneously manifest he
brings each experience into Buddha's paths of
Devotion, Awareness, Love and Letting-go.

However, a tragically common mistake is to obsess over the “Jhanas” or
the various levels of concentration and their blissful experiences and
then shun the Coarse states and seek only the
Subtle and the Very-subtle states of mind.

I don’t get into that directly as
I find it to be a trap and a byway that
can actually lead away from the liberation that
Buddha offers us…

the freedom from the tyranny of adverse:
• circumstances,
• sensations,
• emotions and
• thoughts.

It’s been my experience that the Tantrikas who
spend too much time crawling into their own navels, or
the Theravadans who spend too much time crawling up
their own noses are really just trying to
drown their sufferings in a lake of bliss.

Hmmm, that could almost sound like metaphysical violence!

funny pictures of cats with captions

What’s so bad about that?
Glad you asked!
Just like Rosanne Rosanna Danna used to say,
If it’s not one thing it’s another!

There’s always anther adverse circumstance, or
painful emotion that we’ll have to drown.
And let’s face it, who wants to spend their lives hiding from
their sufferings behind their navel or up their nose?

funny pictures of dogs with captions

That doesn’t sound like the
way of the Bodhisattva warrior to me, it
sounds more like the way of
the trembling coward!

cute puppy pictures

NOTE: Observe how well I resisted the urge to
mention Brave Sir Robin
from
Monty Python and the Holy Grail!

So as Rime Manipa Tantrikas we use just
enough concentration to facilitate our efforts to
use the dark energies of:
• pain,
• sadness,
• anger and
• fear
that spontaneously manifest in our lives so that
{like alchemists of lore} we may transform them into:
• joy,
• love,
• peace and
• Buddha’s wisdom of letting-go.

Now, doesn’t that sound more fun then
hiding up your nose?

True NON-sectarianism

.

There is an unfortunate myth that…

…says to be nonsectarian,
one must study each teaching,
according to it’s lineage
and preserve it’s traditional
explanation and practice… perfectly.

funny pictures - My Nu Yearz resolushun iz tu maintane my perfekshun. U howeber, needz sum wurk.

Folks, that has nothing to do with NON-sectarianism
as taught by that great Rime Manipa
{NON-sectarian devotee of the Buddha of Compassion},
Karma Chagme who wrote:

All the innumerable and profound teachings, such as
Mahamudra and Dzogchen, which are
decisive and unmistaken in each root text, are
indispensable when teaching disciples who will
“hold” the Dharma-lineages.

BUT for personal practice, for…

funny dog pictures - Corgi Choir Practice

…the sake of the future, it is MORE profound to
condense them all into one.

To the contrary, Karma Chagme taught that
we were to blend all the…

funny dog pictures-I practice my innocent smile...

…teachings we have received and
practice their essence.

For the test of the teachings is NOT
whether they are traditional or not, BUT rather
the degree of their effectiveness.

cute puppy pictures - The dog uses lick IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE

All the members of Tibet’s four sects of Tantric Buddhism
laud Lama Dromtonpa the “Dharma heir” of Atisha.
But did you know that he taught,

Dharma is whatever works!” ?

Folks whether you’re reading
the Sutta of the Kalama’s Dilemma
from the Sutta Pitaka
or the Shastras of the Great Saints
the standard is the same... efficacy!

This is also inferred later in the quote
when it’s author explains
that there are two ways to apply Buddha’s teachings.

The FIRST insures sectarian “purity”
while the SECOND insures spiritual accomplishment.
I want the second,
I want to master Buddha’s mental yogas of:

• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go

to such a degree
that I am able to practice them:

• spontaneously,
• habitually,
• easily and
• effectively.
How about you?

Then come,
let us dispense with the tight assed foolishness that
is sectarianism, and instead practice the essence of
all Buddha taught.

Buddha's Only Test of a Teacher {refuge part-4}

.

What’s the third thing we take refuge in?

The assistance, guidance and example
of Buddha’s higher students,
such as our teacher.

What does that mean?
We take refuge in our teacher, NOT by
merely praising him, BUT by
enthusiastically applying his teachings.

How could we know whether or not our teacher is
really a higher student of Buddha?

In the Sutta of the Kalama’s dilemma, we
learn that a teacher’s worth is NOT determined by his:
• wealth,
• fame,
• prestige,
• resume,
• letters of reference or
• credentials.

We are also taught that NEITHER logic nor intuition are
accurate guides, BUT rather, that
the most trustworthy indicators of a teacher's worth are
the results you get when you apply his…

teachings twice a day, every day, for as
little as 7 consecutive days.

That’s right folks, old Lama Jigme is
putting his money where his mouth is.

Do your home work and
notice your results.
If you get crap results, then
go find a new teacher.

When you get good results, and
you desire even more of them, then
come back for more lessons… yep,
it’s as simple as the old commercial that states:
“Try it, you’ll like it!”

Buddhist Refuge - part #1

.

The prayer of Refuge is the most
fundamental of all Buddhist prayers as
it can be found in each of
the three main schools of Buddhism, the:
• Theravada,
• Mahayana and
• Tantric.

Why do we take refuge in the possibility of
Buddha’s liberation rather then in it’s certainty?

Rigidity

Contrary to convention, faith’s certainty lead’s to rigidity,
which can lead to aggression,
which could lead to even more suffering,
and none of us want that.

Reliability

Faith is a contrivance of both mind AND emotion, that
requires energy.

Sadly, when the energy that maintains the contrivance wanes, the
faith collapses just like a house of cards,
typically, when we need it the most.

Imagine you are being chased by a bear in the woods.
You’re breathless.
You’re exhausted.
You’re pulse is racing.

Your blood mass has left your prefrontal cortex
{rendering rational thought impossible} and
also your mid-brain {making it impossible to force yourself into feeling any
of the emotions such as peace, confidence or trust
},
and is now collecting in your brain stem,
the seat of your survival instincts.

Consequently, your faith that the bear will not get you, is weak or already gone.
But NO matter how frightened or exhausted you are, you’ll
always have the ability to DESIRE safety from the big bad bear.
Folks, desire is much more reliable then faith.

So let us trade in faith’s rigid certainty for
desire’s flexible desire.
Come, let us watch the later in action.

QUESTION: Do I KNOW Buddha existed?
ANSWER: Nope.

QUESTION: Do I like the idea of Buddha,
the idea that an individual was born a mere man and
became much more?
ANSWER: Of course!

White Zombie’s “More Human than Human

QUESTION: Do I KNOW his teachings are TRUTH?
ANSWER: Nope.

QUESTION: Do I like the idea that his teachings could enhance my life?
ANSWER: Yep!

QUESTION: How are we to know if the teachings work?
ANSWER: there is only one way:

#1 receive a lesson,
#2 do your homework twice a day, every day,
#3 notice your results,
#4 if you get crap results – then go find a new teacher,
#5 if you get good results – then go get more lessons from your teacher.

Or as the British used to say:
The Proof of the Pudding is in the tasting,

or as Jesus said:
You shall know a tree by it’s fruit,

or as Buddha explained,
It’s the efficacy of the teachings that validate the teacher.

Ironically, the grasping of “faith” is a hindrance to
the “letting-go” of Buddha’s wisdom trainings.
So let us utilize a flexible desire that is empowered by a
playful sense of possibility.

Contemplative Notation

.

Share

QUESTION:
What is Contemplative Notation and it’s benefits?

ANSWER:
When reading through “The Beginning Collection of Practices” you could
notice to the left of the text phrases such as:
• IN-breath,
• OUT-breath,
• RECITE,
• CHANT or
• SING.

That is what we call contemplative notation.

When I was a little boy, my next door neighbor
was forced to learn the trumpet in Junior High.
The first few months he was taught how to finger his instrument
{which sounds far more filthy then it really is}
and also how to sight read musical notation.

The idea being, that once one learns how to do those two things
they’ll be able to play any {NON-virtuoso} piece,
purely from reading sheet music.

Contemplative notation is very similar.
It is my intention that by the second lesson of the first quarter each
of my students will be able to practice any
Buddhist meditation from the most rudimentary
to those that are highly advanced.

cool tiger

I don’t like elitism.
I don’t want to sabotage or hinder my student’s progress just so
that I can feel superior.
I don’t have the intestinal fortitude for that.
I’m too much of a pussy.

I earnestly long for each of my students to
progress so rapidly that they accomplish full enlightenment within
10 months, without ever leaving:
• work,
• home,
• spouse,
• child or
• pet.

And the tool of contemplative notation could
play a great big part in that!
