On page 28 of the practice text
“The Second Collection of Beginning Practices.”
We can find the “Extensive Prayer of Refuge and Bodhichitta.”
It begins:
“Refuge,” what could that mean?
When it rains, a silly guy in a silk suit might cower under his newspaper,
and as such seek refuge from
the storm’s potential to ruin his suit.
Likewise, not only are social, circumstantial, physical, emotional and
intellectual sufferings such as:
• betrayal,
• abandonment,
• injury,
• anger and
• confusion
not very much fun…
but they can negatively influence our
decisions, communication and actions so…
that they could actually draw even more sufferings into our lives, the way
iron filings could be drawn to a magnet.
Yuk!
Who wants that?
So we take refuge,
not only to heal our present sufferings
but to prevent future ones.
Why?
Because suffering sucks!
Tomorrow we’ll discus how to do this with OUT
getting mired in the quagmire of
fundamentalism’s rigidity of blind faith.
May you and yours be
happy and healthy!
