When I was a little boy in the early 70’s
I would sneak down the hall
{when I was supposed to be in bed}
and surreptitiously watch bits of “Hawaii five-o.”
An episode that really fascinated me
dealt with a character who had amnesia
and who had to rely upon flash-backs
to solve the case.
Although disturbing, flashbacks can be interesting
{if not downright entertaining} on T.V. and in the Movies,
in real life, however,
they can be a real pain in the ass.
Although they last mere seconds
the painful and turbulent emotions that they can stir-up
could last for hours, if not days!
Which brings up the age old question:
“What are we to do when
painful emotions and disturbing memories
rear their scabby heads?”
Should we repress them?
Should we indulge them?
Should we minimize, rationalize and justify them?
Or, should we mock both them and ourselves?
All those plans pretty much suck!
{And not in the fun, tingly way.}
It is so much more effective
to take the memories, fantasies and emotions that haunt us
and deconstruct their effect upon us
using the most basic of Buddha’s wisdom teachings.
