I’ve been watching a documentary on YouTube
that a student sent me
about monks seeking for the rebirth
of a high bodhisattva {Tulku}.
One of the sad things that struck me
about the 1st nine minuet portion that I viewed
was the inconsolable sorrow and fear
of the late lama’s senior student.
Although this man had been enthusiastically
following his teacher’s contemplative instructions his entire life,
this Buddhist yogi was still a slave to his fear and sorrow.
Folks, it don’t matter how many hundreds of times
you recite the prayers of refuge and Bodhichitta every day.
It don’t matter how many hundreds of times you bow to the Buddhas every day.
It don’t matter how many hundreds of purification mantras you recite every day.
It don’t matter how many hundreds of ritualistic offerings you perform every day.
It don’t matter how many hundreds of times you recite
the longer teacher prayer every day.
And it don’t matter how many thousands of short teacher mantras you recite every day.
That ritualistic asceticism
ain’t what Buddha’s teachings are about.
What are his teachings about?
What does, truly matter?
Mastery!
Nope NOT mastery of our:
• mind,
• emotions,
• body or
• circumstance
but rather mastery of Buddha’s techniques.
If on one extreme you completely indulge your every emotional whim,
and on the other extreme you try to ritualistically
stuff, repress or deny every emotion
like some kid at Chuck E. Cheese’s playing “Whack-a-mole,”
then what is the happy medium?
To bring whatever we feel,
{from the bliss of sexual delight to the torment of sorrow and fear}
into the Buddha’s mental yogas of:
#1 - Devotion,
#2 - Awareness,
#3 - Love and
#4 - Letting-go.
When we develop the mastery that will allow us to do so:
• spontaneously,
• habitually,
• easily and
• effectively
then truly we have accomplished the enlightenment
of the Buddha of Compassion {Chenrezig}.
When I think about the protagonist of that film,
tortured as he was by his sorrow and fear,
I long for him to be taught Buddha’s true path
and quickly master it.
It is so sad!
People have bought the lie,
that only special people can dialog with Chenrezig,
even though Tibet’s great saint, Lama Drom Tonpa advised,
“trust no one but your Yidam.”
When people learn how to do this
they can quickly ask what level on the path to enlightenment {or Bhumi}
they, and their teacher have accomplished.
But folks, that requires a degree of spiritual ambition and hunger
that surpass our fear and laziness.
If the nuns and monks of Tibet had each learned this easy technique
that I teach even my 1st quarter students,
then they would have seen that their culture’s practices produce saints
who’s ranks are NO higher then the 6th Bhumi.
Back in high school
accomplishing only 6 out of 10
was nothing more then the lowest “D” possible.
The Tibetans’ habit of blindly doing what they’re told
with OUT doing the reality check of noticing their results,
produces full-time ascetics who never get to savior
the complete enlightenment that Buddha said was attainable in just:
• 7 years, or
• 7 months, or
• 7 weeks or even
• 7 days
of correct practice.
Jesus taught that the first “B” attitude was spiritual hunger.
And he was right!
