Contemplative Quickies

.

Share

The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones
was written by Dilgo Khyentse, the late teacher of the Dalai Lama.

Dilgo Khyentse

In it, the author explains that a contemplative’s day
can be divided into two categories:
#1 – our formal, contrived practice sessions and
#2 – our spontaneous, impromptu practice sessions.

Spontaneous

Now this might come as a shock
because I’ve been teaching you that enlightenment
can be accomplished in as little as 10 months
of twice daily formal-practice.

But I’ve also been telling you that whenever you experience suffering,
be it sadness, anger, fear, or pain etc,
that you should immediately bring it into the path

Spontaneous

of
• devotion,
• awareness,
• compassion/love and
• letting-go.

You see, it is a gross error to think
that if you suffer at 8 O’clock in the morning,
it is spiritually productive to wait until 7 at night
to work through it.

procrastination

But…” you might say,
…I can’t spend my whole day
performing one 9 minuet practice after another!

and you’d be correct.

But you can always find time to squeeze in
a brief 3 or 7 breath practice.
Yes it’s true,
your teacher does indorse quickies!

procrastination

Enlightenment’s mastery of
the four-fold yoga of Buddha
is facilitated by the spontaneous practice
of the 3 or 7 breath exercises, {as the need arises}.

BUT the effectiveness of these quickie exercises
is only made possible by
the twice daily performance
of the formal 9 minuet practice.

Here are two examples of quickie practices.

Example #1
7 breaths

IN-breath: “Why take _________?
OUT-breath: “Chen-re-zig!

IN-breath: “Take all __________!
OUT-breath: “Chen-re-zig!

IN-breath: “Why could ‘I’ /
OUT-breath: “… let __________ go?

IN-breath: “Why would ‘I’ /
OUT-breath: “… let __________ go?

IN-breath: “When will ‘I’ /
OUT-breath: “… let __________ go?

IN-breath: “Chen-re-zig/
OUT-breath: “… let __________ go?

IN-breath: “Noticing?
OUT-breath: “Letting-go!

Example #2
3 breaths

IN-breath: “Why take _________?
OUT-breath: “Chen-re-zig!

IN-breath: “Take all __________!
OUT-breath: “Chen-re-zig!

IN-breath: “Noticing?
OUT-breath: “Letting-go!
