No Self

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in the study and
practice of Buddhism is not only the teachings of “No Self” but
our tendency to grasp at
it as if it were a great metaphysical panacea.

Cure all

I’m so grateful, that many years ago one of my teachers explained that
a true scholar of the Pali would NOT translate “Anatta” as “No self” but
as “NOT self.”

Trivialities,” you might say, but I assure you not.
The whole idea of trying to figure out
if you have a permanent or independent “self” at all,
then trying to install it as a belief is very hard work.

hard work

Then why do so many people embrace it?
Because they mistakenly hope that they can
believe their way to Nirvana.

pray hard

One the other hand,
rather then step into
the steaming pile of monkey poop
that is metaphysical debate…

debate

and insist that each of us has NO changeless
or independent “self”,
Buddha simply taught the value of exploring
how whatever we notice…

notice

could be “full” of change
as well as interdependence and
therefore “empty” of anything permanent
or independent to Grasp!

grasp

Buddha’s wisdom teachings are all about the
simple, pragmatic path of letting-go.

Whether it’s the coarse practice of:
• Compassion and Letting-go,
• Love and Letting-go or
• Devotion and Letting-go,
the subtle practice of:
• Bliss and Letting-go or even
the very subtle practice of:
• Awareness and Letting-go.

First letting-go is just a choice, but
with the right training it could eventually
become a beneficial habit.

Buddha

So, you don’t need to exhaust yourself, performing
needless intellectual gymnastics.

Nope, all ya gotta do is learn how to use
Buddhas mental yogas and then
cultivate the habbit of applying them to every painful:
• circumstance,
• sensation,
• emotion or
• mental process
that troubles you.

anguish

Folks, eventually you can get so good at Buddha's exercises of:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go
that you’ll be able to apply them in
as little as 3-7 breaths.

If the difference between a Boob and a Bodhisattva is
the practice of the four yogas,
and the difference between a Bodhisattva and a Buddha is one’s mastery of them,
then the key to our enlightenment is the practice of conditioning ourselves so
that our practice of Devotion, Awareness, Love and Letting-go becomes:
• spontaneous,
• habitual,
• easy and
• effective.

key

Remember guys, it can be argued that
although any good habit can
be installed in 21 days it can also be
broken in as little as 3 days.

21 days

Perhaps this explains why the Buddha persisted in meditation,
even after his accomplishment of enlightenment.
