QUESTION:
Why hasn’t everyone
who has practiced Dzogchen,
twice a day, every day, for a full year
accomplished full enlightenment?
ANSWER:
Because they are doing it wrong.
Folks I gotta tell ya, Ngondro
is NOT the panacea that it’s cracked up to be.
Just because you recite the “Bodhichitta Prayer”
a hundred thousand times
does NOT mean that you’ve trained your mind
to be spontaneously, habitually, or effectively be
compassionate or loving.
Just because you’ve performed one hundred thousand
Mandala offerings
does NOT mean you’ve realized how everything
is empty of anything permanent to grasp.
Just because you’ve learned to use Guru Yoga
to cause your subtle energies
to coalesce into your central channel
and are able to sit in spontaneous awareness…
in no way guarantees
that you’ll be able to practice the union
of awareness and letting go.
Dzogchen teachers classically strive
to install a set of “truths”
about the ultimate nature of reality,
in hopes that their students…
will be able to believe their way to Nirvana.
But the rigidity of faith
makes that impossible.
I love my Kagu and Nyingma brothers and sisters.
I want everyone to easily and quickly accomplish the path.
But if folks persist in using strategies and techniques
that don’t work,
then they’ll never attain enlightenment – no matter how
dramatic or even ascetic their efforts might be.
The blinding effort of accumulating massive amounts
of mere recitations is tragically ineffective.
What works?
How can we train even the most selfish and petulant of us
to truly accomplish compassion and love?
Through the skillful use of:
• assumptive,
• rhetorical,
• well-worded and
• mantra empowered
questions.
How can we train even the dullest
to effectively and transformatively
explore the truths of suffering, interdependence,
and impermanence so that they will be able to
spontaneously, habitually, easily and effectively let-go?
Through the skillful use of:
• assumptive,
• rhetorical,
• well-worded and
• mantra empowered
questions.
Yes, traditionally advanced students
are given the “pointing out” questions.
Sadly, since they are NOT,
assumptive, well-worded, mantra empowered or
even idiot proof,
they are woefully ineffective.
Just because something is old,
does NOT mean it is effective.
Come let us abandon our fearful superstitions
and embrace the courageous, spiritual ambition
that allows us,
{like the Indian prince who would become the Buddha}…
to nakedly view our sufferings
and those of all others
and allow us to chose to only do what truly works
so that we can change both ourselves as well as our world.
Let us find teachers who promise enlightenment in a year.
Let us receive their teachings.
Let us enthusiastically apply their instructions,
twice a day, every day.
Let us courageously notice what results they bring us
in the first week.
If we get bad results let’s exercise the courage
to continue our search for a worthy teacher.
When we get good results – lets return every week
for further guidance.
Come, let us never settle for techniques that
are in effective,
but rather, fearlessly choose to become the Buddhas that
we were born to be.
