The Wisdom of the Bell

.

Share

QUESTION:
How could the bell remind us of Buddha’s wisdom teachings?

ANSWER:
What, in English is called a “bell” in Sanskrit is called a “Ghan-ta.”
When mindfully used it can viscerally remind us of
the two pillars of Buddha’s wisdom teachings,
which are:
• Interdependence and
• Impermanence.

#1 – The very act of ringing the bell
reminds us of Interdependence.
The mind wills to ring the bell.

mind

The mind effects the body,
which effects the bell,
which effects the clapper,
which in-turn effects the bell…

Ringing a Tibetan Bell

which generates sound waves,
that depend upon the air,
and the acoustics of the environment,
that effect the outer mechanisms of the ear…

ear

that effect the brain’s temporal lobes
that effect the mind.

The ringing of the bell could reminds us of
Causality and Interdependence.
As it is written:

“Be it karma, components, conditions or perceptions,
separateness is but an illusion.”

#2 – We ring the bell but once,
and a beautiful tone is produced,
but though lovely it may be,
it will NOT last forever.

With every passing moment it grows weaker and weaker
until we can hear it no more.

impermanence

The tone is physically non-graspable.
We can only experience it passively,
but only temporarily
and then we experience it no more.

The savoring of the bell’s tone,
beautiful yet non-graspable reminds us of two things:
• all things beings and phenomena are subject to change, and so
• in the arena of time, all things are temporary and consequently ungraspable.

As it is written:
“Ever changing one and all,
there is nothing permanent to grasp…”

The mere acts of
• ringing the bell,
• savoring it’s tone and
• exploring their lessons
could cause us to viscerally recollect
Buddha’s wisdom teachings.

Buddha

How will you use interdependence and impermanence to
free yourself from the tyranny of:
• anger,
• fear,
• sadness and
• pain
NOT merely intellectually, BUT on a gut level?
