Breath Magic

.

Whether we know it or not,
whether we feel it or not,
during every IN-breath
we tend to Tighten-up.

What could be the spiritual application of
this physical phenomena?

In addition to just tightening up our muscles,
we are also constricting our attention, or
simply put, we concentrate.

Whether we know it our not,
whether we believe it or not,
our bodies tend to Relax,
even a just little bit,
during every OUT-breath.

What could be the spiritual application of
this physical phenomena?
In addition to relaxing our shoulders, we
mentally and emotionally let-go.

The ideas of noticing and letting-go are
NOT mere contrivances that
we impute upon
random, physiological processes.

To the contrary,
noticing and letting-go are
the hidden spiritual potential within
every breath.

If we are mindful of our natural tendencies to
notice and let-go with
every breath of meditation, then
we could turn the key that unlocks the door to…

Sour Pussed Ascetics

.

When we read
“Seeing this three-fold world
as a fleeting illusion,
you have left this world’s concerns behind
like spit in the dust.”

It can be tempting to fall into the trap of
the sour pussed ascetic who
equates renunciation with hating everything.
There is a special word in Sanskrit for someone like that… “Idiot!

Lower renunciation is all about rejecting the
causes of MY sufferings.

But higher renunciation is about helping all OTHERS to
be freed from sufferings and their causes, by
supernaturally lavishing them with the mind-sets of:
• gratitude,
• awareness,
• love and
• the wisdom of letting-go.

funny dog pictures - Bless you mai son. Go in peace.

Again, it can be confusing when we read passages such as:

“Accepting all hardships,
you have followed
in the footsteps of the masters of old.”

Accepting all hardships?
What could that mean?

After a long day of flogging our shoulders,
are we to put on a nice, itchy hair shirt,
and lay upon our bed of nails for a good night’s sleep?

Nope, not so much!
Remember the teacher of the 14th Dalai Lama explained that
there were 10 levels on the path to enlightenment.

If we are to avoid getting bogged down in
the lower Bhumis {or levels} it’s imperative that
we NOT mess around with the “greasy kid’s stuff” of
needless asceticism.

Then what are the productivehardships” that
do lead to the tenth level of full enlightenment?

The hardship of resisting the programming of our poor coping strategies.

We are all really good at distracting ourselves.
When we’re in pain we’ve previously found it so easy to
numb ourselves with:
• cathartic conversation,
• over eating,
• entertainment,
• alcohol, and
• illicit drugs.

funny pictures of cats with captions

But rather then shoving our head someplace warm and dark…
like our arm pits, a
wise Bodhisattva stands his ground,
takes the bull {of his suffering} by the horns…

stares unflinchingly into his eyes and
reaches through his gaping maw,
deep down into the belly of the beast…
huh?

All that animal husbandry aside, rather then
run from our:
• circumstantial,
• physical,
• emotional or
• mental pain

let’s bring it into Buddha’s paths of:
• devotion,
• awareness,
• love and
• letting-go.

How?
By enthusiastically allowing the energy of
our hardships to feed our virtues we
will rapidly master Buddha’s four yogas to the point of
being able to practice them:
• spontaneously,
• habitually,
• easily and
• EFFECTIVELY.

demotivational posters - STORM TROOPERS

That is the goal,
that is Buddhahood,
that is what is meant by the phrase
accomplishing the Buddha of Compassion”.

That is the ONLY practical application of
facing life’s hardships head-on.
What’s your greatest challenge, and
how will you use it to feed your wisdom?

Nirvana and Cessation

.

There is a lot of confusion in Buddhism as to the
definition of Nirvana.
And no, I don’t mean that great band,
although they truly rocked!

Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit”

Most people agree that Nirvana means “cessation”
but cessation of what?

Some folks think it means cessation of rebirth,
others insist it means the cessation of suffering.
Well, they’re both wrong.
It means cessation NOT of the mere presence of suffering but
it’s tyranny.

Although I did not like the show “Malcolm in the Middle,”
I did enjoy the show’s theme song that sang,
You’re NOT the boss of me now!

That’s what Buddha offers us… freedom,
freedom from the tyranny of suffering
and freedom from the tyranny of rebirth.

Do Buddhist’s believe in a heaven?
Many do, and they call it a “pure land.”
They teach that every Buddha has his own pure land,
or heaven-like place where one can:
• take rebirth,
• cease to suffer,
• bless those they’ve left behind and
• complete their Buddhist training.

funny pictures of cats with captions

It is taught that
Avalokiteshvara’s, Kuan Yin’s, Chenrezig’s
or the Buddha of Compassion’s pure land is
called Po-ta-la.

But I don’t believe in belief!
Do I know Potala exists?
No, but I like the idea!
And so I teach folks how to generate the causes
for themselves and others to take rebirth there.

It’s a fun little aspect of my practice,
but it is certainly NOT the center of it.

funny pictures of cats with captions

Folks, if our happiness depends on our:
• emotions,
• body or
• circumstances
being just right,
then we are their slaves.

Likewise if our happiness depends
on the absence of our:
• sufferings and
• future rebirths then
we are also their slaves.

Hey man, I saw roots!
I don’t want slavery!

humorous pictures

I want liberation;
liberation from the tyranny of sufferings and their causes!
How about you?

Folks our goal is simple,
accomplish the mastery of Buddha’s mental yogas of:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go and
everything else will fall into place!

The "Why" and the "What" of Enlightnement

.

Now we come to the deep question, “Why?
Why entertain the possibility that an ordinary man could become so
emotionally healthy and well-adjusted that
folks call him “The Enlightened One”?

Why attend a teacher and
apply the instructions he gives you?
Easy!

#1 Suffering Sucks!
#2 Everyone Suffers.
#3 When we allow the profundity of universal suffering to
deeply prick our hearts we will long to
do something productive about it; and…

#4 by accomplishing Buddha’s teachings, we’ll have the
ability to truly benefit all others.

And that’s why we pray:
“For the benefit of every living being
may I accomplish Chenrezig right now!”

But what does it mean to
accomplish Chenrezig {the Buddha of Compassion}?

Simple, there are three categories of people:
#1 Buddha’s,
#2 Bodhisattvas and
#3 Boobs!

Homer Simpson is a great example of a boob with
absolutely NO impulse control.

A bodhisattva learns and practices the Enlightened Ones’s techniques which
can be grouped in 4 categories:

#1 Devotion,
#2 Awareness,
#3 Love and
#4 Letting-go.

When a Bodhisattva has mastered these 4 yogas to
such a degree that he can practice them:
#1 Spontaneously,
#2 Habitually,
#3 Easily and
#4 Effectively… then
he has become a Buddha.
Yes, it’s that easy!

Liberation from Sorrow {Buddhist refuge part 2}

.

What is the liberation that Buddha offers us?
Convention tells us that he offers us liberation from
even the mere PRESENCE of suffering.
But is that correct?
Nope, not so much!

When we read Buddha’s teachings, we see him describing:
#1 the suffering’s that he endured prior to enlightenment and
#2 the sufferings he experienced after his enlightenment.

Oh oh!
Someone’s wrong, either convention, or Buddha.
Come let us reexamine our preconceptions.

The liberation that Buddha offers us is NOT
freedom from the mere presence of suffering, BUT
freedom from suffering’s actual tyranny.

But what is sufferings’ tyranny?
When our sufferings influence our:
• choices,
• words and
• actions
then truly they have become our boss, king and tyrant.

Buddha teaches us how to harness sufferings so that
instead of being our masters and oppressors who
retard our spiritual progress they
actually become our servants who multiply our
love, bliss, wisdom and peace.

For example, during the 1st webinar lesson we’ll learn how to use the
suffering of fear, sadness, anger or guilt to actually increase our
wisdom of letting-go as well as our peace!

NON-sectarian Buddhism

.

The Tibetan word “Rime
can be translated as “NON-sectarian.”

And in a world where almost every sect of every
religion bares it’s teeth in rivalry and petty-one-ups-man-ship
{yes, even in Buddhism}
being NON-sectarian often means that
we piss everybody off!

In Tibet the four primary sects are the:
#1 Nyingma,
#2 Kagyu,
#3 Sakya and
#4 Gelug.

The first three of this Motley Crew {just say NO to spandex!}
emphasize “impermanence” in their wisdom training,
whereas the forth tends to emphasize “interdependence”
in their wisdom trainings.

As true Rimes we work with both sets of contemplations
in the practice known as “The Verbal: Three Cauldrons.”
It is a pragmatic Lam Rim sadhana that is found on pg. 81
of “ The Beginning Collection of Practices .”

While savoring these contemplations
it is important to remember that
our job is NOT to think our way to Nirvana BUT to…

…playfully, silently and mentally recite each of
these contemplative questions during it’s IN-breath and
relax into the chanting of "Om Mani Padme Hum" during each OUT-breath.

Yes my friends, there are two kinds of questions:
#1 – hard ass questions {that actually require an answer} and
#2 – lazy bastard questions {that merely require our devoted relaxation}.
These exercises are definitely integral to
this quick and easy school of rapid enlightenment.

There are three cauldrons in this collection of exercises, the:
• Abdominal,
• Thoracic and
• Cranial
centers that we access through our
gut, chest and then crown centered awareness.

This paradigm that we’ve inherited from the ancient Chinese Taoists is
a fun way to simplify the rather complex traditional Hindu and Buddhist
energy systems
and also a fun way to organize…

the Sutric and Tantric Lam Rims,
{or structured and outlined essence of all that Buddha taught}.

Auras

.

Share

It has been said that every thing, being and phenomena is
surrounded and pervaded by subtle, electro-magnetic energy.

A foundational Buddhist teaching is that of causality, or
in other words, that everything effects
everything, indirectly, if not directly.

That being said, it
is not a far reach of the imagination to
consider how:
• our day,
• our conversations,
• our emotions and
• those of all the others with whom we interact could
effect our energy field.

Yep, some interactions could benefit our auras, and
other interactions could deplete or even poison them.

What are some of the simple things we could do to
comb out our auras, in addition to spiritual practice?

We could:
• walk barefoot on bare earth, or at least on concrete,
• take a shower first and last thing every day,
• we could go for a ride in a convertible with the top down, or
• we could enjoy a gentle; foot, hand, ear and scalp rub,
at the hands of a loved one.

What are some of the simple things you could implement to
make your life into an even greater work of art?
