In Mahayana Buddhism, prevalent in north east Asia, the
teachings of the great saints, {known as shastras} fit
into two categories:
#1 the profound path known as the Madh-ya-ma-ka or middle way and
#2 the vast path known as Yo-ga-ca-ra and Chit-ta-mi-tra or mind only.
Yes, Madhyamaka is correct when it explains that
all:
• things,
• beings and
• phenomena are
empty of anything permanent or separate to grasp.
And Yogacara and Chittamitra are correct when
they explain that all experience is subjective to karmic influence.
But, {yes folks there’s a big, hairy but}
but they have their short comings.
#1 Many teachers of the Madhyamaka teach that the key to
enlightenment is believing that “you” are in fact empty of
anything separate and permanent to grasp.
Now hear this, if you try to believe your way to Nirvana, you’ll
accomplish nothing higher then the 6th Bhumi.
The teacher of the 14th Dalai Lama explains that on the path to
enlightenment there are 10 levels {or Bhumis in Sanskrit}, so
only accomplishing the 6th Bhumi gets us a mere 60% of the way to enlightenment.
Hey, doesn’t passing only 60% of a high school exam fetch us a “D”?
#2 Many teachers of the Yogacara and Chittramitra sincerely believe that
although a Buddha experiences awareness, he is
free from the presence of recall, fantasy, and analysis.
Folks we can NOT lobotomize ourselves to Nirvana.
If you look closely at the translations of the Buddha’s most
ancient teachings you’ll see profound pragmatism.
Rather than emphasis on belief or mental contrivances his four main
categories of techniques were those of:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go.
Buddha’s path is easy and practical . That is why he insisted that
enlightenment could be accomplished in as little as
• 7 years,
• 7 months,
• 7 weeks or even
• 7 days.
