Nirvana and Cessation

.

There is a lot of confusion in Buddhism as to the
definition of Nirvana.
And no, I don’t mean that great band,
although they truly rocked!

Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit”

Most people agree that Nirvana means “cessation”
but cessation of what?

Some folks think it means cessation of rebirth,
others insist it means the cessation of suffering.
Well, they’re both wrong.
It means cessation NOT of the mere presence of suffering but
it’s tyranny.

Although I did not like the show “Malcolm in the Middle,”
I did enjoy the show’s theme song that sang,
You’re NOT the boss of me now!

That’s what Buddha offers us… freedom,
freedom from the tyranny of suffering
and freedom from the tyranny of rebirth.

Do Buddhist’s believe in a heaven?
Many do, and they call it a “pure land.”
They teach that every Buddha has his own pure land,
or heaven-like place where one can:
• take rebirth,
• cease to suffer,
• bless those they’ve left behind and
• complete their Buddhist training.

It is taught that
Avalokiteshvara’s, Kuan Yin’s, Chenrezig’s
or the Buddha of Compassion’s pure land is
called Po-ta-la.

But I don’t believe in belief!
Do I know Potala exists?
No, but I like the idea!
And so I teach folks how to generate the causes
for themselves and others to take rebirth there.

It’s a fun little aspect of my practice,
but it is certainly NOT the center of it.

Folks, if our happiness depends on our:
• emotions,
• body or
• circumstances
being just right,
then we are their slaves.

Likewise if our happiness depends
on the absence of our:
• sufferings and
• future rebirths then
we are also their slaves.

Hey man, I saw roots!
I don’t want slavery!

I want liberation;
liberation from the tyranny of sufferings and their causes!
How about you?

Folks our goal is simple,
accomplish the mastery of Buddha’s mental yogas of:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go and
everything else will fall into place!
