Don't Blame the Buddha!

No, “Judeo-Christian Baggage” is NOT a reference
to the luggage claim in the Tel Aviv air port.
Here in the west, most of us
were NOT born into Buddhist families.

new born

Most of us were raised with a Judeo-Christian world view.
As such, we were sometimes taught that
when a devotee of God experienced sufferings,
it could be because God was testing them,
as in the book of Job.

new born

In the 70’s television show “Maud”,
the protagonist would often chide,
…God’s gonna get you for that, Walter!

new born

In the movie “The Invention of Lying
the protagonist explained
that there was a man in the sky,
who sometimes does very bad things to us.

But all of us are prone to various and sundry acts
of self-righteousness and it can often feel much more comfortable
to blame God rather than find fault with our own actions.

blaming god

But even in the Christian new testament,
in the book of James,
it is written,
… be thou not deceived, what thou hast sown, thou shall reap…

karma police

So even in the bible we can understand
that NOT everything bad in our lives comes from God,
but rather can often be the natural
propitiation, forward momentum or consequence of or actions.

Enter Buddhism, that teaches that our sufferings
are NOT the frivolous caprice of some celestial being, but
are the results of our own actions.

god

So when we suffer let us NOT assume
that it is Chenrezig {the Buddha of Compassion} testing us,
for it most certainly is NOT.

But wait, there’s more then one flavor of karma...

31 flavors

Some of our actions are good,
some of our actions are destructive
and some are just plain neutral.

Remember karma is NOT just what we do and say
but also what we intend.

So when we set intention that we want to heal the world,
or become a Buddha, just as quick as possible
that could really set things in motion
just as the tossing of a stone into a calm pond
could generate concentric rings that spread out upon it’s surface.

ripples on water

Karma can be very complex
since everything could effect everything else,
if not directly then at least indirectly.

Even quantum mechanics postulates
that the minds of the observers
can have an effect upon the phenomena being observed.

Come, let’s return to our hypothetical pond.
Yes, at this moment, it is calm and placid,
but what if 27 different people
each threw stones in the water.

ripples on water

Could not the concentric ripples
of each splash effect the ripples of other splashes?
Yes, it could become very difficult to predict
the shapes of the ripples,
no less which stones caused which effect.

more ripples on water

Needless to say, our limitless universe
is infinitely more complex then that pond.
How futile could it therefore be for us to
strive to hunt down the cause of every action?

resistance is futile

Couldn’t it be so much simpler
to merely observe our experience
and bring it into Buddha’s path’s of:
• Devotion,
• Awareness,
• Love and
• Letting-go?

resistance is futile

Come let up sprint upon Buddha’s easy path
to full enlightenment!
