Cutting through illusion should
not be confused with cutting the cheese,
although both can seem quite unpleasant.
The vajra dagger {Phurba}
of Vajrakilaya is fun,
as is the vajra chopper { Trigug or Kartika}
of the classical Dakini iconography.
As Rime Manipas { NON-sectarian devotees of the Buddha of Compassion} we
remember that the great Tibetan Saint, Dza Patrul Rinpoche taught:
embodies all Buddhas;
one mantra, the six syllables
embodies all mantras;
one Dharma, Bodhichitta,
embodies all practices of the developments and completion stages.
Knowing the one which liberates all,
recite the Six-syllable mantra.
Or in other words:
• one deity – Chenrezig {The Buddha of Compassion},
• one mantra – the six syllables {Om Mani Padme Hum} and
• one practice – Bodhichitta
{Conventionally Compassion as well as Love and
Ultimately Buddha’s transcendental wisdom of Letting-go}
are all that are required to
meet our spiritual needs and
rapidly fly us to enlightenment’s 10th level {or Bhumi}...
provided that we skillfully
• perform the 9 minute practice
no less then once every morning AND once every evening,
• as well as use the 3 OR 8 breath technique every time that
anger, fear or sadness manifests.
But there is still something very primal and satisfying about
stabbing, slicing and cutting.
Perhaps that could be why those metaphors have worked themselves into
so much of Buddhist-tantric literature?
So how can we spiritually stab, slice and cut,
without chasing after various and sundry
yidams, devas or visualized, stylized, idealized Buddha’s of Light such as
such as Manjushri and Vajrakilaya,
or any of the many dakinis such as Vajrayogini?
Easy!
By first remembering that the literary and iconographic references
to stabbing, slicing and cutting are just metaphoric,
and that our sharp weapon to utterly slay our spiritual adversaries
such as anger, fear and sadness {no less rage, terror and despair}
are the two Bodhichittas of Love and Letting-go.
By skillfully practicing those mental yogas
one can utterly subjugate any spiritual affliction,
often in as little as 3-8 breaths!
