Contemplative Notation

QUESTION:
What is Contemplative Notation and it’s benefits?

ANSWER:
When reading through “The Beginning Collection of Practices” you could
notice to the left of the text phrases such as:
• IN-breath,
• OUT-breath,
• RECITE,
• CHANT or
• SING.

That is what we call contemplative notation.

When I was a little boy, my next door neighbor
was forced to learn the trumpet in Junior High.
The first few months he was taught how to finger his instrument
{which sounds far more filthy then it really is}
and also how to sight read musical notation.

The idea being, that once one learns how to do those two things
they’ll be able to play any {NON-virtuoso} piece,
purely from reading sheet music.

Contemplative notation is very similar.
It is my intention that by the second lesson of the first quarter each
of my students will be able to practice any
Buddhist meditation from the most rudimentary
to those that are highly advanced.

I don’t like elitism.
I don’t want to sabotage or hinder my student’s progress just so
that I can feel superior.
I don’t have the intestinal fortitude for that.
I’m too much of a pussy.

I earnestly long for each of my students to
progress so rapidly that they accomplish full enlightenment within
10 months, without ever leaving:
• work,
• home,
• spouse,
• child or
• pet.

And the tool of contemplative notation could
play a great big part in that!
