Although my Driver’s License reads:
“Lama Jigme Gyatso,” my full name is
“Terton – Lama Jigme Gyatso: Rime Manipa Tantrika – Rinpoche.”
Hey man, it’s more than just a long name…
it’s a winning answer in Scrabble!
So let’s take that bad boy apart.
“Terton” is one who receives teachings directly from
the Buddhas and then shares them with others.
“Lama” is traditionally translated as
“he who is weighty with spiritual qualities” or
simply as “teacher.”
“Jigme” could be translated as either
“fearless” or “courage.”
“Gyatso” could be translated as “ocean.”
“Rime” could be translated as “NON-sectarian.”
“Manipa” could be translated as
“Devotee of the Buddha of Compassion.”
“Tantrika” could be translated as practitioner of
Buddha’s contemplative, esoteric, sexual yogas.
The title “Rinpoche” or “precious one” is used to address the
highest ranking teacher present.
Put it all together and what you could have is:
“Ocean of Courage Teacher – the NON-sectarian devotee of
the Buddha of Compassion who practices the
essence of all Buddha’s teachings.”
Wow, that’s mouthful!
“Ocean of Courage Teacher,” that is a bit more auspicious then perhaps,
“He who trembles like Barney Fife.”
Although bold and sassy, I may now be;
I assure you dear friend that
is NOT how I started out!
I have had the very great privilege of receiving spiritual guidance from
EVERY sect of Buddhism.
Just as a funnel guides fluid across a wide surface, that
it might enter a very narrow opening,
likewise, by applying the teachings I offer you,
you could assimilate the most:
• poignant,
• effective,
• essentialized and
• convenient of
all the teachings of all the traditions.
That’s right folks… it’s one stop shopping.
Some of the Rime Manipas who have effected me most deeply are:
• Dilgo Khyentse,
• Patrul Rinpoche,
• Karma Chagme,
• Atisha and of course
• Chenrezig himself.
Once you’ve entered the third quarter of your training, we’ll
explore some extraordinary quotes that have profoundly assisted my
journey upon Buddha’s path.
Tonight we’ll savor this one:
are extensive and great in number.
However, life is short and intelligence limited,
so it is hard to cover them completely.
You may know a lot,
but if you do NOT put it into practice,
it is like dying of thirst
on the bank of a great lake.
-Karma Chagme Rinpoche
Rather than waste time and energy mastering minutiae,
let us marinate our minds in
the essence of all that Buddha taught.
Come, let us forsake the mental masturbation of scholastic pride and…
actually apply the teachings in a contrived and concise manner for
at least 9 minuets twice daily, that we may be empowered to
apply them spontaneously as they are needed… you know,
whenever you feel an unpleasant physical or emotional sensation.
Practice in this way, and
there ain’t no reason not to accomplish the path in
a mere 10 months.
