Thursday's Recommened Reading

.
From Dilgo Khyentse's
"
The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones,"
lets read from the Commentary on pg. 30-31 and
let's also read from the root text on page 199.

In today's selection from Dilgo Khyentse's commentary we can read:

"The same process is at work
in our feelings about those close to us:
husband, wife, children and friends.

Because we love them,
we favor them over all others,
and should any one praise or help them
we feel quite inordinately pleased.

But this is NOT true love;
it is based on thinking they are ours...

It would be difficult to master
the whole vast spectrum of Buddhist teachings,
BUT

if we can find an authentic teacher;
attend and serve him in the right way;
receive his teachings on
the view, meditations and action;

and put them into practice,
we will certainly be able to accomplish
the essence of the Dhar-ma."

From the Dalai Lama's
"
The Path to Enlightenment,"
lets read page 54-55 and
let's also read from the biography of
the 3rd Dalai Lama on page 203.

In today's selection the Dalai Lama explains:

"Bud-dhism is speaking about life
and the human situation,
and is NOT merely a cultural relic
from the past.

Time may flow on,
but the essential nature of
the deeper problems and mysteries
that human beings encounter

in the course of there lives
remains the same.

Contemplation of the teachings of
Buddha Shak-ya-mu-ni is merely contemplation of
certain facets of reality,

and it will cause to unfold within us

a deeper understanding of
our ourselves, our minds,
and the nature of our sense of being.

As the teachings are merely pointing out
key facts of life,
facts that, if realized,
cause one to evolve in wholesome directions..."

as well as enduring the disliked is universal..."

The Power of Joy

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #159
from your Buddhism expert

I’m not teaching you how to contrive joy, when you
don’t feel it. That’s a bit too much like mental
masturbation.

Yes, there are times you could feel like “crap on
toast,” but that isn’t all the time, now is it? We
are all capable of experiencing the full range of
human emotions, and that means there are times that
we will experience spontaneous, uncontrived joy.

Could you remember one the times in your life you
could have felt great joy? Could you imagine what it
could be like if, out of the blue, you felt great
joy? What could it be like if all of a sudden, you
found yourself energetically, jumping up and down
and rejoicing with wild abandon? Could you see how
spontaneous joy could definitely be an energy source?

What are some of the things that could cause us to
rejoice? Could it be reconciliation with an
estranged friend or relative? Could it be a raise,
a promotion or both? Could it be the acquisition of
a new sweetheart? Could it be word of a loved one’s
successful surgery? Could it simply be earning a
high score on a difficult and important test?

But what do we typically do, when all of a sudden,
we are overcome by dynamically, energetic joy? What
are some of the ways we could enthusiastically
dissipate that fun energy, just as quick as we can?
Could we jump up and down, doing a “happy dance?”
Could we shout “Woo Hoo” like Homer Simpson? Could
we call and write each of our friends and
acquaintances?

Yes these are all excellent ways of “blowing off
happy’ steam.” But remember the Buddha’s highest
teachings are all about harnessing the power of
whatever spontaneously arises. Normally we strive
to harness spontaneous:
• sorrow,
• fear,
• anger
• or turmoil
and that is good. But did you know that we could
also harness spontaneous joy?

But how? How can we harness the intoxicating energy
of joy? Yes, today is the last day of February, and
in many places there is snow on the ground. But
think, for a moment, of the summers you spent as a
child. Could you remember playing with the garden
hose, in the back yard? Could you remember the fun
of turning the water on, full blast, and watching the
hose just whip and dance around? Could you recall
the challenge of trying to capture that wild thing?

Our spontaneously rejoicing energy can be very much
like that, can’t it? So we need a tool or a set of
tools that are easy and effective. But we also need
to be well acquainted with those tools. That is why
Essential Devotion” and “Essential Meditation
are found on page 3 of the daily devotional text,
“Quick Path to Happy Peace.” If you haven’t down
loaded this FREE text you can make arrangements to
do so by going to http://www.lamajigme.com

Remember one of the constants of Buddhist meditation
is the act of flipping and flopping between
awareness of that which spontaneously arises, and
simply letting go.

What is a good way to skillfully ride the bucking
bronco of spontaneous joy? Use the silent
contemplation of “Essential Devotion.” What is an
excellent way to let go of this dynamic energy?
Simply use the exercise “Essential Meditation”.
Perhaps you could perform three rounds or
repetitions of the first, and then three repetitions
of the second and then three repetitions of the first
and then three repetitions of the second over and
over again.

Why? Why do such a thing? Is joy bad? Are we trying
to push it away? Nope, not at all! Joy is fun and
it is a dynamic energy source. And when it
spontaneously manifests in our life we have one of
two choices:
• do we harness this energy and use it to
further our progress upon Buddha’s paths of
spontaneous awareness and the wisdom of letting go?

• or do we choose {often by default} to just
squander it’s energy and opportunity and wait until
later on to meditate?

Well, which should we choose? I’ll give you a hint.
The first is the key to full enlightenment is THIS
lifetime, and the second makes about as much sense
as masturbating before sex!

Is there anything wrong with performing Snoopy’s
“Happy Dance,” or shouting Homer Simpson’s “Woo
Hoos?” Nope, not at all. But it is even better to
harness the power of the present moment, the dynamo
available here and now, to progress even further upon
Buddha’s path of spontaneous awareness and the
wisdom of letting go!

Robert Schimmel

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #157
from your Buddhism expert

Robert Schimmel

Cancer.” Now there is a word that can cause even
the stoutest heart to skip a beat. Upon learning
that one has this dreaded disorder what are some
of the natural emotional reactions? Well how about:
• denial,
• fear,
• anger,
• sorrow
• and even hope.

Just like one of us, when stand-up comedian, Robert
Schimmel got this horrendous diagnosis he too was
subject to these feelings. Remember it is NOT what
we feel, BUT what we do with what we feel that
separates the men from the boys, or the Buddhas from
the Bodhisattvas.

So what did Robert Schimmel do as he followed his
course of medical treatment? He married a raw,
vulnerable honesty about his dreadful experience
with his sense of humor and the product was his book entitled: “Cancer on Five Dollars a Day (Chemo Not
Included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest
Journey of My Life”

If you’re curious you may order a copy through:
http://www.lamajigme.com/Books.html
and Amazon.com will give me about 4% as a gift to
be used for monastic support, including the
founding of San Diego’s first Buddha of Compassion:
meditation center and monastery.

And how does this relate to Buddha’s teachings?

Simple! Buddha taught that every:
• thing,
• being
• and phenomena
is directly or indirectly interconnected.

If you’ve already downloaded your FREE copy of
“Quick Path to Happy Peace” from
http://www.lamajigme.com
then you could already be familiar with the passage
on page 6 that reads:

“…be it causes, components, conditions or
perceptions,
separateness is but an illusion;…”

Yes, our experience of health challenges is
dependant upon many things, including our:
• causes,
• components,
• conditions
• and perceptions.

How did Robert Schimmel influence his perception of
cancer? With words! Many of the exercises in “Quick
Path to Happy Peace”
use words, gestures and
mantras to help us transform sorrow, anger, fear or
turmoil into Renunciation, Concentration, Insight
and Compassion.

What does that mean to you? It means that you have
access to the tools that make a man out of a boy,
or a Buddha out of a Bodhisattva!

Scuba Adventures

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #156
from your Buddhism expert

Scuba Adventures

Have you heard that 49 year old, Markus Groh, a
tourist from Vienna, was attacked by Sharks? When
in Florida, he participated in a caged dive with
the outfit known as “Scuba Adventures.”

All was going quite well.
• The underwater tourists were in their
Shark Cage,
• the water was “chummed” with fish blood,
as well as fish parts,
• and consequently, the sharks were present.

Yep, all was well, until Markus jumped OUT of the shark
proof safety cage. He was attacked and later died of his
injuries. But Why?

Why would someone swim out of a perfectly good shark
cage and willingly approach sharks that are in the
grip of feeding frenzy? In all the excitement is can
be easy to forget our own mortality and vulnerability.
Perhaps that is why Buddha taught that if you were
to observe the gound in a forest, the deepest
impressions would be those of the elephant and
that likewise of all the contemplations we can
consider, the ones that effects us the most
profoundly are those concerning the inevitability
of our own death and impermanence.

Why contemplate death? Does Buddha want us to be
timid, frightened or maudlin? Nope! But the
enlightened one recognized the power of
impermanence to snap us out of the “highway
hypnosis” that we sometimes find ourselves caught in.

I sincerely wish that when the late Markus Groh
found himself swept up on the emotional momentum of
excitement and adventure he would have taken a
moment to recall the impermanence and consequential
NON-grasp-ability of:
• the circumstance,
• the excitement
• and the desire to “up the stakes”.

Yes, contemplating death, impermanence and
NON-grasp-ability are good ways to help us change
the way we feel and snap us back into the present
moment. But there is an even easier process.

Use the precise Words, Gestures and Invocations in
“Harnessing the Power of the Bowing Prayer” and
you’ll increase your experience of
physical calmness, energetic centeredness and
mental resourcefulness –
http://www.lamajigme.com/Change-90.html

But hurry, because this special offer for
“Harnessing the Power of the Bowing Prayer”
will be over in just 3 days.

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #154
from your Buddhism expert

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

Poor Natasha Sizow. As you may already know, this 24
year old teacher is accused of sending some of her
High School students explicit pictures of herself
over her cell phone. Did she do it?

I don’t know. But I do know this. I know that whether
she is guilty or innocent, right now, she is suffering.
How much embarrassment, fear and stress could she be
feeling right now? But is she really worthy of our
compassion?

That does NOT matter at all! It doesn’t? But why?
How could we feel compassion for this complete
stranger who might be guilty after all, no less for
every being in every world who is now facing serious,
criminal charges?

Easy! Sometimes questions are the answer. Let’s
contemplate the following question:

What are some of the ways that “myself” and
every other living being could be exactly alike in
our longing to be free from every suffering and
our desire to be lavished with every happiness?

True, we’re not facing charges right now. But we could
use our creative mind to imagine what it could feel
like to stand in Natasha’s shoes and feel the absolute
longing to be free from her present circumstances
as well as their causes.

This is an excellent way to further our journey upon
Buddha’s path of giving a hoot about the sufferings
of others. But wait; there’s more.

If we were to only use the cleverly worded question
above, we would move forward but not at maximum
speed. Why not?

Because using only the question is just a humanistic
strategy that can only give us limited results since
neither you nor I are completely enlightened yet.
How could we make this more spiritual and more effective?

By combining the question with a spiritual practice
that invokes the power, compassion and insight of
Chenrezig.

For instance, couldn’t we mentally and silently recite
the above question during the IN-breath and then
during the OUT-breath verbally recite the words and
practice the gestures of the Bowing prayer?

This is only a spiritual path if we:
• rely upon Avalokiteshvara’s strength
• to accomplish his aspirations.

Those two ideas really cut to the heart of the message
that I want to instill in everyone who gets “Harnessing
the Power of the Bowing Prayer”

http://www.lamajigme.com/Change-90.html - or any
of my other products.

Sufferings Resources pt. 2

Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea # 114
from your Buddhism expert

Suffering’s Resource pt 2

What are some of the ways we could often dissipate, squander and waste suffering’s energy, that has the potential to actually further our progress upon Buddha’s paths of: love, peace, insight and happiness? Catharsis! “Getting something off our chest.” Going into story BEFORE we Harnesses the potential power {that is latent in every suffering} could be as self-defeating as choosing to masturbate before sex!

Tomorrow we’ll explore how to harness our sufferings.

Today, you could find out about receiving personal instruction from a Buddhist Monk over the telephone by going to: http://www.LamaJigme.com
