Expressing Devotion

.

#1 Devotion to Chenrezig {the Buddha of Compassion}
is often expressed though offerings and praise,
I’m telling you it is best expressed through invocation
of either one of his names or his mantra
while practicing your teacher’s instructions.

#2 Devotion to one’s teacher is best expressed
by simply applying his instructions.

The Wednesday series of weekly webinars begins NEXT week.

May you and yours be
happy and healthy!

Saturday's Recommended Reading

.
From Dilgo Khyentse's
"
The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones,"
lets read from the Commentary on pg. 74-75 and
let's also read from the root text on page 193.

In today's selection from Dilgo Khyentse's commentary we can read:

"All the Buddhas of
the past, present, and future
have achieved and will achieve enlightenment
by relying upon a spiritual teacher.

The most profound of all teachings,
the Ma-ha-mu-dra [the Great Seal] and
the Great Perfection
[Dzok-chen or Ma-ha-san-dhi],

are realized through devotion rather than
through the fabrication of the intellect.

With unwavering and single-minded devotion,
see the teacher as the Buddha himself and
everything he does as perfect;
then his blessings,

the wisdom of the all the Buddhas' minds,
will flow effortlessly into your being.

Practice in accordance with his
instructions, and, as all the
clouds of doubt and hesitation are
cleared away, the sun of his compassion will

shine through,
warming you with happiness."

From the Dalai Lama's
"
The Path to Enlightenment,"
lets read page 97 and
let's also read from the
Translator's Introduction on page 12.

In today's selection the 14th Dalai Lama explains:

"A spiritual aspirant requires a model,
something he or she can look up to as
an ideal and thus find guidance and inspiration.

In Buddhism this the the Triple Gem,
the Three Jewels of Refuge:
the Buddhas, Dharma and Sangha.

When we think of the fully enlightened Buddhas -
the beings who have purified their minds
of all stains and obscurations and
who have expanded their wisdom to
the limits of existence -

we feel very attracted and awed;
but somehow there always seems to be a
great distance between the Buddhas and us.

Therefore, there is the refuge of the Sang-ha,
the community of spiritual aspirants,
the assembly of practitioners
dwelling in the various stages of
practice and attainment.

These beings provide us with a
perspective on the path.
We have to look up to the Sang-ha,
but NOT as far as to the Buddhas.

The Sang-ha make us think,

'This person is NOT that far ahead of me.
If I just make a bit more effort...' .

They give us confidence for spiritual practice.
Sometimes they make us feel like we can even
race them to enlightenment.
These are the Sang-ha of spiritual friends.

Thoughts of the Buddhas make us
numb with admiration;
thoughts of the Sang-ha cause us to
jump to it and to apply ourselves with
zeal to the spiritual path.

This path and the methods for traversing it
are the third Jewel of Refuge, the Dhar-ma.
This is the collection of
the teachings to be practiced and
the realizations to be attained."

In today's exploration of
the " Intermediate Collection of Practices "
we could consider an excerpt from:

Lama Praise

Beyond being defiled by the two
obscurations of pride and jealousy,
you pretend to still be purifying them.
Having certainly reached the sublime path’s very end,
you insist that you are still learning.

Beyond the extremes of Sam-sa-ra and Nir-va-na,
you still manifest here in Sam-sa-ra.
Peerless teacher,
I bow before you.

Why could some Full realized teachers
occasionally pretend to still be on the path?

The Dalai Lama's excerpt could infer
that in their compassion they
do NOT wish to overwhelm their students.

Wednesday's Recommended Reading

.
From Dilgo Khyentse's
"
The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones,"
lets read from the Commentary on pg. 52-53 and
let's also read from the root text on page 175.

In today's selection from Dilgo Khyentse's commentary we can read:

"If you have practiced the Dhar-ma,
your life have been meaningful,
and even if you are suddenly struck and killed
by a thunderbolt this very day, you
need have NO regrets...

Now, you may have wasted you life so far;
but once you start to practice the Dhar-ma, then ,
however long you live,
every instant of every day

will be an immeasurably precious chance to
be with your teacher,
to receive his instructions,
and to practice them wholeheartedly
until the day of your death.

Then you will know clearly that
there is nothing more worthwhile then
the Dhar-ma and that practicing it to
perfect yourself is a precious investment for
this life and all your lives to come."

From the Dalai Lama's
"
The Path to Enlightenment,"
lets read page 76-77 and
let's also read from the biography of
the 3rd Dalai Lama on page 214.

In today's selection the 14th Dalai Lama explains:

"We are all very fortunate to
have been born in THIS present age.

A human life in this era is extremely
meaningful and powerful, being capable of
achieving any goal including the
exalted state of omniscient enlightenment.

When we consider this fact, we
realize that we have a most
precious opportunity before us, and
that if we waste it we
will suffer a great loss.

The value of recognizing the freedoms and
endowments is that one will spontaneously
experience the wish to use one's life in
the pursuit of a meaningful existence."

In today's selection from
"The Healing Power of Love and Letting-go"
we can read:

"I explore how my kind teacher could be
Chen-re-zig, but in my obstinacy I
disregard his guidance.

I have considered how each being could
have been my kind parent, but
in bad temper, I still abuse
even my Dhar-ma companions.

Bless me, and those with
bad Kar-ma like me, that we may
truly follow teacher with
humble, steadfast discipline,

flexible in mind and deed,
in this life and all others."

Monday's Recommended Reading

.
From Dilgo Khyentse's
"
The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones,"
lets read from the Commentary on pg. 48-49 and
let's also read from the root text on page 173.

In today's selection from Dilgo Khyentse's commentary we can read:

"A hidden yogi is a practitioner
who does NOT mix with other people
and become involved in worldly activities,
and who seeks neither fame nor followers.

He burns with an irresistible longing for
spiritual practice and has seized the
root of Dhar-ma -
the determination to be free from Sam-sa-ra.

Now, you might think:
'If I renounce all worldly activity now,
what will happen to me later?
How am I going to find food, lodging
and all the rest of it?'

But such deluded hesitations and anxieties could,
if you allow them,
dominate the rest of your life,
pulling the net of sam-sa-ra tighter and tighter.

As long as these inveterate
[deeply rooted] tendencies continue,
so will suffering.

You will never be a good Dhar-ma practitioner
until your are truly sick of ordinary life
and know how to be satisfied
with whatever you have."

From the Dalai Lama's
"
The Path to Enlightenment,"
lets read page 72-73 and
let's also read from the biography of
the 3rd Dalai Lama on page 212.

In today's selection the First Dalai Lama explains:

"The true spiritual master [teacher]
looks upon all living beings with
thoughts of love
and shows respect to teachers of all traditions alike.

Such a one only harms delusion,
the enemy within."

In today's selection from
"The Healing Power of Love and Letting-go"
we can read:

"I have received teacher’s beneficial instructions but frequently
turn my back on them as if they were mere words.
Although I may have practiced them in a token sense, I have
been fooled by distraction.

Bless me, and all phantom beings like me, that we may extract
the Essence of the Generation and Perfection phases."

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #154
from your Buddhism expert

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

Poor Natasha Sizow. As you may already know, this 24
year old teacher is accused of sending some of her
High School students explicit pictures of herself
over her cell phone. Did she do it?

I don’t know. But I do know this. I know that whether
she is guilty or innocent, right now, she is suffering.
How much embarrassment, fear and stress could she be
feeling right now? But is she really worthy of our
compassion?

That does NOT matter at all! It doesn’t? But why?
How could we feel compassion for this complete
stranger who might be guilty after all, no less for
every being in every world who is now facing serious,
criminal charges?

Easy! Sometimes questions are the answer. Let’s
contemplate the following question:

What are some of the ways that “myself” and
every other living being could be exactly alike in
our longing to be free from every suffering and
our desire to be lavished with every happiness?

True, we’re not facing charges right now. But we could
use our creative mind to imagine what it could feel
like to stand in Natasha’s shoes and feel the absolute
longing to be free from her present circumstances
as well as their causes.

This is an excellent way to further our journey upon
Buddha’s path of giving a hoot about the sufferings
of others. But wait; there’s more.

If we were to only use the cleverly worded question
above, we would move forward but not at maximum
speed. Why not?

Because using only the question is just a humanistic
strategy that can only give us limited results since
neither you nor I are completely enlightened yet.
How could we make this more spiritual and more effective?

By combining the question with a spiritual practice
that invokes the power, compassion and insight of
Chenrezig.

For instance, couldn’t we mentally and silently recite
the above question during the IN-breath and then
during the OUT-breath verbally recite the words and
practice the gestures of the Bowing prayer?

This is only a spiritual path if we:
• rely upon Avalokiteshvara’s strength
• to accomplish his aspirations.

Those two ideas really cut to the heart of the message
that I want to instill in everyone who gets “Harnessing
the Power of the Bowing Prayer”

Gold or Poop

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #153
from your Buddhism expert

Gold or Poop

Interconnection; directly or indirectly everything
effects everything else. It has been said that the
simple act of a butterfly, gently articulating it’s
wings in a Beijing park, to dry the morning dew that
has gathered upon them; can set in motion a chain of
events that can effect the weather patterns over
New York’s Central Park, half a world away.

Like wise our karma is both effected by my many things
and also effects many things in turn. Our perceptions,
for instance, are effected by our karma, our bodies
components, and our external conditions.

If we regularly practice the prayers and guided
meditations of “Quick Path to Happy Peace” { that is
available for FREE at http://www.lamajigme.com
} then, by the blessings of the Buddhas and
Bodhisattvas AND by the truth of Cause and Effect,
we will progress upon Buddha’s paths of devotion,
renunciation, love and wisdom.

But if we are growing in wisdom every day does that
mean that those around us will be able to perceive
or recognize our development? No, not at all!

Some people will have the karma to see us clearly,
but others will not. Some will see that what we have
to offer them is as valuable as gold coins. Others
could see what we offer them to be as odious as
doggie doo. How could this be a test of our love?

Simple, if someone values what we have then we share
it with them. We can share our teacher’s essays or
web address and that’s great, that’s loving. Why?
Because love seeks to lavish others with blessings
or at least what they experience as blessings.

On the other hand, if someone’s karma causes them to
perceive us and the fruits of our spiritual practice
as the spiritual equivalent of doggie doo, then the
compassionate thing to do would be to NOT share our
Lama’s teachings with them. For compassion seeks to
shield others from suffering or at the very least,
what they experience as suffering.

After all, my friend; everyone enjoys being tossed
a gold coin. But who wants to have doggie doo tossed
at them!

If you agree, then celebrate with a set of seated bows
to the Buddha of Compassion – as taught in my
Instructional CD, “Harnessing the Power of the
Bowing Prayer
” – http://www.lamajigme.com/Change-90.html

Bliss and Openness pt. 15

Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea # 133
from your Buddhism expert

Many centuries ago, when the great Bengali, Buddhist monk named “Atisha” got to Tibet what did he do? He scolded everyone! This is his most famous quote:

“You foolish Tibetans each perform the practices of a hundred deities
but do not receive a single attainment,
while we Indians perform the practice of just one deity each
and receive the attainments of a hundred.”

So what? How could this teaching of “Less is More” be important? And why could it be really stupid to ignore this sage’s advice? We’ll explore that tomorrow.
