My Precious!

.

I’m not gonna say I’m a big, Sci-fi geek,
but when I hear the term “Precious Human Life
I can’t help but think of Gollum from JR Tolken’s "The Hobbit".

But when we use the phrase “Precious Human Life
what we’re really talking about is:
#1 possessing a golden opportunity and
#2 making the most of it.

By now you’ve heard me teach you many, many times,
NOT to rely upon faith, for:
• it is connected to fear,
• it feeds on rigidity,
• it gives birth to aggression and
• leads to suffering.

So instead of taking the traditional approach,
which is steeped in fear and dogma
let’s explore a more pragmatic approach.

Yes, if you look hard enough
we can always contrive reasons for resentment and despair.
Yes, the argument could be made that neither,
our minds, hearts, bodies or circumstances are perfect.

So what?

Wouldn’t it be cool…

wouldn’t it be delightfully subversive
if our flawed, silly lives were golden opportunities for
rapidly accomplishing full enlightenment and
then helping others do likewise?

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we lived in a war zone, or
our family was a war zone, or
our hearts and minds were filled with intense violence.

If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we were dying of dehydration or
if we were enfeebled by the lethargy that comes from utter starvation.
If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we were animals, with out the neurological capacity or even the
physiological capacity to do so.

If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we were utter slaves, totally exploited and horribly taken advantage of.
In the 20th century in America we have it really good, don’t we?
If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It would be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we were greedy, cruel and exploitive predators.
Then the very notion of love and compassion could be physically repulsive.
If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
we were utterly obsessed with competition and pettiness.
If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.

It could be very difficult to both learn and practice Dharma if
like Thurston Howel the Third

we had no real personal experience of suffering to
nudge us forward on the spiritual path or
no real awareness of other people’s sufferings to
give birth to love or compassion in our hearts.

If right now, we enjoy freedom from those obstacles then
we have a golden opportunity.
Come, let us make the most of the golden opportunity we've received!

What is Suffering?

.

When I first began studying the Buddha’s teachings,
and I’d come upon the word “Suffering
I felt that it had to be something grandiose, and over the top…
like a Michael Bay action movie.

But I was mistaken.
Suffering can be VERY subtle.
Whenever we don’t receive what we desire,
when we desire it, that is suffering.

Whenever we don’t keep what we enjoy,
for as long as we’d like to, that is suffering.
Whenever we experience, that which we don't like,
that is suffering.

It is this subtle aspect of suffering that
renders it all pervasive.

Kind of like the stink that comes,
from a kitty pooping at three O'clock in the morning,
YET refusing to cover it up.
Though you may try to pull the covers over your nose,
the stench can NOT be escaped from.

Consider infants.
Every time an infant cries,
it’s because they are experiencing a facet of suffering.

Babies cry when they’re tired and require a nap.
Babies cry when they’re tired and have just arisen from a nap.
Babies cry when they’re hungry.
Babies cry when they’re thirsty.

Babies cry when they have gas.
Babies cry when they have soiled themselves.
Babies cry when they’re lonely.
Babies cry when they’ve had too much visiting.

What is the freedom the Buddha offers us?
Buddha does NOT offer us liberation from the mere presence of suffering,
BUT rather liberation from it’s tyranny!

suffering is NO longer the Boss of you?

Apology

.

<

A true apology requires the love to tend to another’s emotions and
the courage to allow ourselves to feel the pain of
vulnerability, guilt, and shame with a dash of humiliation.

No we do not apologize to make ourselves feel better,
but to make the person that we are addressing, feel better.

Let us never
• justify,
• minimize or
• rationalize
our actions that cause another pain.

Rather lets us enthusiastically express both regret for the suffering we generated
as well as resolve to err no more.

A true apology means that we’re really putting our comfort out there
and meeting the needs of another.

Does even the most gut wrenching apology guarantee
that the offended party will take the high road?
No, they may be cruel, petty and vindictive.
Then why, why should we put ourselves out there?

Because spiritual evolution demands
that we meet the needs of others…
especially when it’s inconvenient.

The Wednesday series of webinars begins in just 2 weeks.

May you and yours be
happy and healthy!

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

.

Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea #154
from your Buddhism expert

Natasha Sizow's Sufferings

Poor Natasha Sizow. As you may already know, this 24
year old teacher is accused of sending some of her
High School students explicit pictures of herself
over her cell phone. Did she do it?

I don’t know. But I do know this. I know that whether
she is guilty or innocent, right now, she is suffering.
How much embarrassment, fear and stress could she be
feeling right now? But is she really worthy of our
compassion?

That does NOT matter at all! It doesn’t? But why?
How could we feel compassion for this complete
stranger who might be guilty after all, no less for
every being in every world who is now facing serious,
criminal charges?

Easy! Sometimes questions are the answer. Let’s
contemplate the following question:

What are some of the ways that “myself” and
every other living being could be exactly alike in
our longing to be free from every suffering and
our desire to be lavished with every happiness?

True, we’re not facing charges right now. But we could
use our creative mind to imagine what it could feel
like to stand in Natasha’s shoes and feel the absolute
longing to be free from her present circumstances
as well as their causes.

This is an excellent way to further our journey upon
Buddha’s path of giving a hoot about the sufferings
of others. But wait; there’s more.

If we were to only use the cleverly worded question
above, we would move forward but not at maximum
speed. Why not?

Because using only the question is just a humanistic
strategy that can only give us limited results since
neither you nor I are completely enlightened yet.
How could we make this more spiritual and more effective?

By combining the question with a spiritual practice
that invokes the power, compassion and insight of
Chenrezig.

For instance, couldn’t we mentally and silently recite
the above question during the IN-breath and then
during the OUT-breath verbally recite the words and
practice the gestures of the Bowing prayer?

This is only a spiritual path if we:
• rely upon Avalokiteshvara’s strength
• to accomplish his aspirations.

Those two ideas really cut to the heart of the message
that I want to instill in everyone who gets “Harnessing
the Power of the Bowing Prayer”

Sufferings Resources pt. 2

Meditation and the Spiritual path - idea # 114
from your Buddhism expert

Suffering’s Resource pt 2

What are some of the ways we could often dissipate, squander and waste suffering’s energy, that has the potential to actually further our progress upon Buddha’s paths of: love, peace, insight and happiness? Catharsis! “Getting something off our chest.” Going into story BEFORE we Harnesses the potential power {that is latent in every suffering} could be as self-defeating as choosing to masturbate before sex!

Tomorrow we’ll explore how to harness our sufferings.
